| 1971-77 | Nicolls, Allison Kwaj kid. You might remember my sisters and I as the "Nicolls" Triplets, our father as Dr. Nicolls, our mother as Gail the scuba diver and mother of the triplets! My mother rode around on this ridiculous bike that carried all three of us until we could ride by ourselves. We used to jog with our parents (age 4 and up). I lived at the very end of Silver City at trailer 832. We had a really nice place. Dad and Ray Burke added a large addition on to the trailer, a living room, master bedroom and one more bedroom. So we had a lot of room but still only ONE bathroom! We also had a really nice yard that mom made into a jungle paradise. She had orchids growing everywhere. My favorite memories are of coming out my front door everyday and having the lagoon right in front of me. The beautiful sun rises and the storms that would throw sea water onto our living room windows. Swimming in the water right in front of our house...and the sand bar ... that the Lucero's and us claimed as ours! The friends I made...and the memories of those friends who have since passed away. |

| 1971-73 | Randall, Larry 5709 Kettering Court, Richardson, Texas, 75082 (972-680-9732), WA5BEN@ARRL.net. I was VP of the island Ham club, and an operator on KX6BU just about every Saturday -- running phone patches for hour upon hour. I lived in the Coral BQ, and worked for Kentron as a CCTV tech. After leaving Kwaj, I used my knowledge of video recorders and cameras a the regional video guy for Panasonic for about a year. I then founded a professional video service, which led to my engineering and assembly of the first minicam broadcast system to air a news cast in the Southwest -- and, we believe in the United States. We installed mini-cam and editing systems with time-base correctors in 35 stations across the South and Southwest. I was nominated and elected to Active Grade in the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers in 1974. We also had a full mobile studio that was hired by 20th Century Fox to do numerous promotional interview sessions for various movies. I was the manager and TD on those, working with William Holden, Gene Wilder, Dom Delouis, Jill Claighberg, Paul Mazertski, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, and others. After tiring of the television production environment, I wound up as the Senior Field Engineer and Marketing Support Engineer for the premier US cryptographic company -- one of the top 3 companies in the world. I spent 7 years running about the world (39 countries on 5 continents) as one of four persons allowed to discuss the inner workings of the key generator with national government cipher committees. I joined Texas Instruments in 2004, after spending 12 years as an independent contractor. I now manage exports and logistics for a 1000+ person group, and design and audit business processes. My wife of 10 years (Judy) and I spend a lot of time with our grandkids. Skype has proven to be a wonderful tool to keep up with fast-growing kids spread around the country. | 1988-03 | Roberts, Chuck & Marlene 283 Pin Oak Lane, Crossville, TN 38555, (931) 707-0624, cmroberts4@yahoo.com. Chuck and Marlene worked for Pan Am World Services, Johnson Controls and Raytheon, Range Systems Engineering over the 15 year period. Chuck worked in Range Operations with Pan Am and Johnson Controls, and Range Support with Raytheon. Marlene was Secretary for the Supply & Transportation Dept for all 15 years. Marlene is also an original member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 044 at Kwaj. We very much enjoyed the island life and have many fond memories of parties at Emon Beach and at the Vets Hall. Chuck enjoyed his fleet of boats over the years, and the world class fishing. He became a master "pepper farmer" while his boats were in dry dock. The best part of living on "Almost Paradise" was the friendships we formed which will last forever. We retired to our home in Satellite Beach, FL for a year and then relocated to TN. Thanks for the music Shermie! |
| 1965-66 | Roberts, Michael 1090 W. Dragoon Springs Pl., Tucson, AZ 85737 (520) 297-9618, mrob832662@aol.com. My younger sisters Jetta Lynn and Beverly as well as my younger bother Stan each were able to share the unique wonderful experience of island life and school in Kwajalein. I am the resident investigator In charge of the Tucson office of the U. S. Food and Drug Administration with that magical retirement number of over 30 years of service. My last years though have shifted focus and have me on the road a bit more since becoming the Chapter President of the Union representing not only the bargaining unit employees of FDA but also four other Federal Agencies for the West Coast, Southwest and Central Regions. This is my final location before retirement after working in Berkeley, CA: San Francisco, CA and El Paso, TX. I have three children - Chris 28, Cassie 22 and Sean 18 who each have contributed in their own unique way to extending my retirement date :-) :-). In looking back, the "Rock" really did rock. |
| 1965-68 | Roberts, Doug Sacramento, CA, robfamily@surewest.net. My Mom, Dad and I lived were on Kwaj for about 3 years. Dad ( Bill Roberts) and Mom (Ginny Roberts) lived in one of the concrete block homes along Ocean Drive? He worked for Global Associates with George Epsom, Glen Elkins, Click Nelson, Art Kadis, Gene Cohan and a number of others. I was in kindergarten through first grade. I have very fond memories of Kwaj. Played golf with dad, swam in the ocean, caught lots of fish, learned to swim in the big pool filled with sea water. I remember when they launched a test rocket and all the people who lived in trailers would go to more substantial homes in case debris came off the rockets during launch. We would run out to the beach behind our house and watch the rocket trail across the sky eventually being retrieved by a Navy ship. We used to fish by the dump since there was open dumping into the water and all the garbage attracted lots of fish. Storm parties were fun for mom and dad even though it could have been really dangerous if any had come on shore with high tides. We used to play all day and come home when the big horn sounded around 6 p.m. Things were different then and we were allowed to explore and learn back then. I remember coming home with a whole bunch of baby sharks in my bike basket but I can't remember where I found or caught them. A funny story was when others were planning a birthday party for my mom or dad. George Epsom, then head of security, was going to be away but promised to show up from the mainland somehow. On the night of the party he flew in without anyone knowing he was back. That night he got dressed in his suit with briefcase and went down to the lagoon at the beach club. When the party really got going he slipped into the water, swam over by partners and came trudging out telling everyone that he promised to make it even if he had to swim! I imagine that he had a pretty good time the rest of the night. I know that my Mom still talks about that night. My Dad Bill passed away in October 2003. Mom is doing well and living in Stockton, CA. I am sure that she would love to hear from anyone who was around in those days. My email is robfamily@surewest.net and will be happy to forward notes to her. Kwaj was a lot of fun especially for a little kid. I will always remember our time there. I only wish that my kids could have spent some time there. My parents best friends were all there then and it was one of the most special times in their lives. |

| 1968-71 | Sandvoss, Keith Retired and living in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, KEESIE@aol.com. I was a young engineer in late 1960's thru early 1970's, working for Martin-Zachry Constructors, the first contractor on Kwaj. We build just about everything on Kwaj and for that matter, the whole atoll. We built the Martin-Zachry Country Club for parties, etc. Imagine it's still there, but called something else. My boss was John Story, whose Contractor I.D. was #1. Very good memories of Kwaj. Remember the old Jap pillboxes on Roi, as well as the Jap cemetery on Kwaj, the shark pier, Yokwe Yuk, the short runway on Meck, the local Marshallese on Ebeye. Those were the days. |

| 1969-74 | Schafer, Roger A. Kwaj, Kentron, raschafer@aol.com. I was on Carlos from September 69 - March 71. Remember Bill Patton, Cary Bedford, Jack McCreary, John Barsic, Bob Horn, Emery Kingery well, very well. And who could forget Stanley the Cook. Carl who was Stanley's Assistant came to Gugeegue when Ernie Muster of Global came over to Gugeegue from Carlos in 71. We had a wonderful group on Gugeegue. A McHale's Navy of sorts. Smaller Island and smaller headcount than Carlos. Those were good times for sure. Saw Jack McCreary in Dallas probably in 1978 when he and Art Kowalkowski were back there helping on a Proposal. I did 3 tours with Kentron. 69 - 74 on Kwaj. Then 75 - 77 on Wake and then 78 - 81 in Dallas. Each of those runs were good and special. That was a good era of course with lots going on and jobs for all. My life has been storied of sorts. Many years in Saudi Arabia, recently several in Iraq. Now taking it easy on my Farm in Pennsylvania. Working on a personal web site. |

I am a graphic designer for The Desert Sun Newspaper, Gannet Corp. in Palm Springs, California. I have many great memories of life as a child on Kwaj. I knew every inch of the island, as least areas where I was allowed to explore. There was still a lot of live amo buried there so we had limitations. I lived across the street from a big field directly down the end of the street from pier on the lagoon side of island. There were no TVs or telephones only radio for entertainment or hand radios for communication overseas. No fresh milk, only canned. I learned how to swim in the lagoon as well as the salt water pools and remember the smell of the flowers and the trade winds. I especially remember the fright of seeing the drop off area when swimming in the lagoon. |

My dad did work out on Meck, for 2 1/2 years. Everyday, after school, I would go fishing out at the Shark Pit. I loved that place! I was almost 14, when we arrived in '76, and 16 when we left. To early to drink, but I remember the Oly machine by the Bowling Alley! We also used to hit the Snake Pit for some pizza, and then go across the street, to the snack bar, and eat it there. John jtisit2000@yahoo.com Hi, and a special hi to all the people who lived and
worked and played on Kwaj. I was there as a corpsman in the hospital, enjoying 'normal'
life after a seemingly long long tour of duty in Viet Nam. Was very happy to find the
warm, breezy paradise called Kwajalein; I can still feel the wood against my back at the
Richardson Theater and the soft, warm rain on my face as MASH danced across that huge
screen where no one seemed to mind it was raining cats and dogs. How wonderful and
peaceful it was to be there, surrounded by a multicolor of skins and greater multicolor of
umbrellas. O Kwaj, I still miss you! Can you hear my song to you, O Kwajalein, Sweet
Kwajalein! My best to you, Shermie. Thanks! And a special hello to everyone
who visited the hospital during my stay there and who can remember that gorgeous tall
blonde male wonder called John! Ha! That was me! |

| 1962-63 | Touchet, Neil ntouchet@epix.net. I was a Kwaj kid. My father, ALbert Touchet, was an RCA employee from Moorestown, on the TRADEX Program. We moved to Kwaj from Barrington, NJ. After we left Kwaj he was assigned to the Atlantic Missle Range on a radar tracking ship for for both the Mercury Program and other government projects. He used to grumble about the daily flights up to and back from Roi in a DC3. He wasn't wild about flying. We came to Kwaj on a L-1049 Lockheed Super Constellation from Hawaii with a fuel stop at Midway. It was a long flight. They had not extended the runway at this time and that was the biggest thing that could land on Kwaj. I remember the Navy PBY's using JATO bottles to get off of the island. They dropped the expended canisters over the ocean and we used to collect them diving where we weren't supposed to be. We had a U2 land on the island and since it was still classified for viewing at that time they covered it with tarps and put a 24-hour guard around it. I don't recall how it got off the island. Although I was still in elementary school, my friend Alex and I used to hang out with the laborers and the natives at the Enlisted Club. They were much more colorful than the folks at the O-Club. It was really a great experience for a kid. I still have a copy of the 1962 EKATAK yearbook. I grew up in Apopka, Florida where my folks bought and ran a motel in their retirement. I went to Florida Southern College, then followed Al's footsteps with a career in the Army. My father passed away in Memphis, TN on November 1980 at age 72. I retired from the Army in 1992 from the Pentagon. My wife and I moved to the Harrisburg, PA area in 1995 and where we are now. I kind of semi-retired as I still work as an Information Technology consultant. |

We started in the Concord, MA, went to Kwaj in '1971, back to Concord (then Acton) in '1973, migrated to St. Petersburg in 1979, consulted in Maryland and New Jersey in 1982-83, consulted in Mississippi in 1984-'95, consulted in Boston and New Hampshire in 1995-'97, took a direct job at Metric Systems in 1997. That's the short story. The long part is that our three sons got married. Dwayne has a son, Christopher, and Greg has a son, Timothy. Jeff and his new bride, Paula, are going to "think about one" in about a year (they say). We think of Kwaj as a wonderful experience during an important time in the lives of our sons and thankful for the opportunity to have met so many fine people there. Where are you people now? What are you doing? |

Married Jo Slack in 1989. Two daughters (Stacey & Shelley) and two grandsons (Ocean and Jordan). Living in Radnor, Ohio; the action capitol of the universe. We both work at a nearby amusement park. Jo is in charge of booking talent and it is my responsibility to refill all the toilet paper dispensers. We will soon be opening our on-line boutique, "The Hip Hippo." Clothing not just for the full-figured but for the grotesque blubber-butts as well. Life has been good to us since our prison wedding and thankfully the IRS has yet to track us down. I must admit that I miss the bad-old-days on Kwaj. The gaiety of the Emon beach body-slamming competition; hammering upside-down tequila shooters at the bachelors pool and then beating the dog-snot out of the Kwaj Cops in softball; adventure sailing with the Cal 20 banditos; riding our bikes across the reef to big Buster and barely making it back with flat tires as the tide came in; Zodiac surfing the big waves in the pass; partying in the heart of Typhoon Pam; the shark pit snorkeling and the arm pit sniffing. Look for us in an upcoming starring role of "Cops-the wild chases that got away!" dw40@columbus.rr.com |

I was in the service and only 18 years old, that meant I could not avail my self of the alcoholic libations, had to be content with diving and fishing. Loved every minute out there. | 1989-91 | Whitley,
Carlos C. & Bonnie J. After our four year tour of duty in Hawaii we felt we still
had not found "Paridise". A good friend of ours was the Marine Evaluator for
USAKA and talked us into replacing him when his tour was up. It was the best two years and
we loved it. We would have stayed, but the Army found us and made us return to Virginia.
The Edingers replaced us. Bonnie worked with Pan Am and then Johnson Control on Meck
Island for Louie Rowe. Really miss that ride on the Jelang K and Jera. Our daughter
traveled with us and met her future husband, Tim Mow. We gave them an engagement party at
Emon Beach and your band played. Christine Whitley and Tim Mow were married in Hawaii a
couple of weeks before our return to the mainland. They now have two beautiful boys ages 7
and 4. Carlos is now retired from the Army and is a Lt. with the Homerville Police
Department. Bonnie is the Production Manager at the local newspaper, The Clinch County
News. Christine is a Nurse and Tim is also a Police Officer working for Carlos. We all
live in Homerville, Ga., a small town up the road from the famed Okefenokee Swamp. Our
son, who visited from Hawaii several times, now lives in Ponchatoula, LA where he and his
wife Pilar are working on master degrees and awaiting the arrival of their baby. We
remember fondly our time on Kwaj and miss the late afternoon kite flying, scuba diving and
fishing with the Hawley's on the Minnow, reefing, movies at the Richardson and the great
parties at the Marine Department and Yuk Club. Thanks to our time on Kwaj we have a pretty
good shell collection which we visit the schools with and talk with children about the
ocean, shells, and scuba diving. We are truly blessed to have been a part of the Kwaj
history. Carlos's e-mail is carloswhitley@hotmail.com and Bonnie's e-mail is bonniewhitley@msn.com. |

| 1990-95 | Williams, Ted I was an Elementary Principal at George Seitz then Superintendent of the Kwajalein School System. I left when my wife contracted Cancer; thinking she had whipped the big C, we returned to the states then, months later it returned in form of bone cancer and after a valiant fight of three years she lost the battle. I have since remarried and my wife Pam enjoys hearing my island stories. We love to travel and have been to Germany and that region twice and are planning a trip to the islands in the next couple of years. We visited Lance and Barbara Hooker there; they worked on Kwaj and she taught at the high school. I work in the Granite School District in Salt Lake City, Utah and at age 71 am an elementary principal at Lake Ridge Elementary School. Between my wife and I we have 5 sons and have 10 grandkids. Three of our sons and families live here, her oldest son (career Army) is stationed in Germany and my oldest son Ted Jr. works for Intel in Phoenix, Az. My total career in Granite District has been 16 years which I interrupted to come to Kwaj. It was one of the high lights of my career in education. I have great memories of Kwaj and when I visit your web site, I enjoy being transported back in time -- I go to the site from time to time to look. While on Kwaj I worked first for Johnson Controls then Raytheon. I am still working because I still enjoy helping kids. Would be interested in hearing from friends on Kwaj when I was there. I am in touch with a few. Thank you for your work to help people maintain connections of Kwaj and the people in their lives while there. Sincerely, Ted Williams, email: teepeewilliams1@msn.com. |

| 1993-05 | Woods, Diana mailto:Ishoponline2save@gmail.com, San Antonio, Texas 78260, (210) 367-3131, I got married in June of 1993 and moved to Roi-Namur in August to be with my husband, Joe Woods. He ran the Roi-Namur Power Plant. My job was the MIT Travel Secretary for years until the office moved to Kwajalein. Sometime around 1999, I flew back and forth to the MIT office. I never tired of the beauty of the islands as we flew day in and day out. With the one exception, when the left engine failed on the way to Kwaj. For a minute or two, we were going face down. Fortunately, the pilots are the best in the world. That plane flew with one engine for quite some time. As it turned out, we landed beautifully. Thank you guys! Life was the best on these precious islands. I was surrounded by the most wonderful people from so many different places and backgrounds. Now I am a Leisure Travel Consultant and am still meeting people on the beaches of the world. How awesome is that. Thank you Lord for your many blessings! |
