| This breed
arrived in Switzerland along with the ancient Roman soldiers. They are
large dogs at 25 inches high and weigh about 85 pounds. They are
strong and muscular. The coat is thick and black. There are patches of
light brown on the upper legs and also above the eyes. The white chest
blaze is edged with light brown. The facial mask may be white and also
the feet and tip of the tail. These
energetic dogs are attentive and can be impetuous. They do not have a
tendency to bite. They are loyal to their master and are suspicious of
strangers.
These dogs were used by the ancient Romans as
fighting dogs. Armed with heavy iron studded collars, they were sent
into battle. They made excellent herd dogs in those times and still do
today. They are full of energy and their heavy coat makes them
resistant to the coldest winters, but they are not well suited to warm
climates. These beautiful dogs are intelligent and loyal. |
